Vista Ultimate is slow

Well, thank you for all of your comments. I will try to address them
as I work to resolve this issue, which is not resolved.

My Windows Experience Index is 3.0. I see that 3D business and gaming
graphics perfomance is 3.0, and Desktop performance for Windows Aero
is 3.2. Everything else is 4.6 and above. How can I tell if my
graphics card shares the computer's memory?

With regard to Norton Anti-virus, I am not convinced that this alone
is the problem. Yes, I did reconfigure my system to remove all the
services and startup programs that Norton uses. But that knocked 60
seconds off a 3 minute time period. It still takes two minutes to view
the Windows Welcome Center after I login. That is very slow.

I will try uninstalling the Norton Anti-virus program. I will download
and install Avast. I'm using it on other systems, and it seems to
perform ok. I'll reply after I try these things.

Well... the WEI doesn't hold much weight with me. Not that it's not a decent
indicator of which system components are "weak links." But my laptops have
pretty low WEI scores and I'm quite happy with their performance. The WEI on
this box is 2.4, with desktop graphics being my weak link. As to boot
times... I'll admit I haven't timed them on any of my boxes. Since I rarely
bring my boxes down, it's not an issue for me. The main issue, as far as I'm
concerned, is how does the box perform once you get to the desktop. And from
your post, I take it that you're unhappy with your performance. Norton AV is
notorious for being a system resource hog, so I wouldn't so easily discount
its impact on system performance. As to what other crapware came
pre-installed on your system, well, without a specific list, I can only
continue to recommend that you review what's being loaded at boot time and
attempt to minimize that stuff.

To recap, I've uninstalled Norton Antivirus. It degraded startup to
the point where it was taking 10 to 15 minutes to see the Windows
Welcome Center. After that, login took 30 seconds. So the other
services and startup applications aren't bothering me. I can live with
30 seconds.

I installed the professional version of Avast Anti-virus. Now login
takes 2 minutes. So it's definitely the anti-virus. It seems that no
anti-virus program is efficient at startup on a 64-bit machine.

I even checked the Microsoft site for an alternative. They have no
alternative for a 64-bit machine.

The network issue was a red herring. Turning the wireless router off
had no definitive, reproducible effect on startup.

Omit(ideally) or disable superfluous AV email scanning component
might help a little.

Glad to hear your time-to-desktop has improved almost exponentially. One of
the side effects of better security is that it takes longer to do stuff.
Sure, you could dump all AV products and gain, what, a minute, maybe 90
seconds on your way to the desktop, but do you really want to do that? I
sure don't...
