Vista, the new ME.

I was considering purchasing a new PC for some time now and I had hoped that
Vista would be far better than Windows XP but alas, I fear I am reliving the
ME days. Having browsed these forums and hearing friends and relatives tell
me of their Vista OS woes has caused me considerable fear. Then throw in
Microsoft's end of life cycle for Windows XP and you have all the elements of
a doomed experience. Forcing me to upgrade to a new and buggy system is
hardly what I would call consumer friendly. Also throw in the fact that, as
for me anyway, I have collected many games and what not that would probably
not even run under Vista at all. So there is more wasted money.

There is hope, simply give users an option to upgrade their service and
support for Windows XP beyond the end of life cycle for a fee, and in the
meantime fix all of the Vista bugs, which in my humble opinion is how it
should be in the first place. As for the people who purchase their computers
with XP installed during this time simply waive the fee for them. Or as the
best case scenario extend the service and support for XP users beyond the
stated time limit. Consumer choice! What a wonderful concept! As for me if I
am to purchase a new system I would demand an XP install or nothing at all.
Final thought on Vista, buyer beware. Lastly, I do not wish to be entirely
negative so I will give a heartfelt thanks to Microsoft for putting out a
tremendously wonderful OS Windows XP.

End 2 cent statement/suggestion.

Phew.

XP as a few more years of support, and just because Microsoft doesn't
officially support it, doesn't mean the OS is completely dead. By the time
XP is forced out of people hands, Vista probably won't seem all that bad

No one is forcing you to upgrade.
If you upgrade, you do so by your own choice.
As for the lifecycle, there is at least a few more years until that
will be an issue for Windows XP and until then Windows XP will remain
supported.

I don't think Vista is as buggy as previous OSes. I think what the problem
is is people just don't understand how things work. There is a lot more to
Vista than just a new interface. Some of the new features are quite nice and
some so so and so just plain trash. For me the UAC is trash, until you can
control it it will remain trash. A lot of my problems with Vista went away
when I turned UAC off. Now it is just a mater of getting used to the other
new and very useful things. Vista is also different from Windows Me in one
other very important area. Windows Vista adds many useful things to Windows.
Windows Me adding bugs and only bugs. Me was a very weak upgrade and a test
buy Microsoft to see if people would pay for a service patch if they called
it a new versions of Windows. It didn't work.

Isn't funny that a year ago people we're griping about how awful XP was? Now
all of the sudden its a great and wonderful OS!

I thought I was the only one who picked up on that.

I have been working the XP news groups since it was in beta. A certain,
persistent bunch of complainers had nothing ever to say positive about XP.
Now all of a sudden XP is great. Stay with XP. Vista sucks! All of XP's
problems were solved or obliterated with the introduction of Vista.

You can control what UAC does and does not do.

Do a little reading and some research and you'll find out how you can fine
tune it.

What do you mean upgrading?

Going from from XP to Vista, is a DOWNGRADE!

Soo many problems with Vista! And WE the people DON'T want DRM, so **** OFF
WITH THAT!!

So then this guy called DanS said something like:
Uh....I've NEVER heard that.

It was a common opinion on the release of XP. It's a view still held by a
small minority these days. I'm sure there are archived posts on google...
Remember the days of 'software x won't run on XP'... Sounds familiar.

Uh....I've NEVER heard that.

You don't remember nVidia's drivers seemingly randomly getting stuck in
infinite loops and bringing down the system?

Everyone was screaming bloody murder about that...!

Over night Vista will become a gem. Then Alias will be telling everyone to
stay with Vista. (-:

Yep. It took Nvidia about 3-5 months to come out with stable drivers for
Windows XP.

What does 'software x won't run on XP' have to due system stability ?
