it seems the results are all over the map.
some say it sucks, others say it's the best thing since sliced bread, and
some say it changes nothing.
so your results isn't all that unusual.

Can you imagine? that same hardware you have now, if it was running XP,
would be lightning fast!

Wrong. The same hardware I'm running now WAS running XP a year ago, and
there is no noticeable difference in speed, response times or any other
aspect of performance. It doesn't seem to be any faster or any slower -
just about the same.
Im now writing this from Ubuntu, that is stable, fast and secure and
free.....

Wrong again. I've tried four different Linux distros over the past year,
and they are NOT any more stable than Vista. I've had Ubuntu freeze solid
on a number of occasions. So far Vista hasn't frozen or blue-screened once
for me.

Im not kidding... many had done the "upgrade" from vista to XP, and they
are very happy to have gotten rid of vista and have been amazed from the
speed, stability and responsiveness of XP.

XP is the last good OS from Microsoft, vista was a pile of crap, and we
will see if windows7 in 2010 if its any better, but im not expecting much
any more.

I was expecting vista to be really good, but it was really bad.
I didnt think MS was capable of such crap...

Did you forget about Windows ME. Vista is Windows ME re-born

When I saw that statement, I knew you were BSing, XP will be faster on the
same hardware as Vista. Tell us what you run this on?

Linux betas are of better quality than Vista releases.

Mid-range desktop (2.4G Intel dual core, 2G RAM).

You and the remarkably eloquent 'terren' are obviously correct - XP is
faster than Vista in most benchmarks.

BUT - you failed to spot a key word in my original post: NOTICEABLY. I'm an
experienced PC user (since before you two were born, I suspect) and have
used every Microsoft desktop OS they've ever made, and can honestly say that
Vista is not NOTICEABLY slower than XP, except in one key area: network file
copying.

In all other respects, including...

* web site editing (NetObjects Fusion, Serif WebPlus, Namo WebEditor Pro)
* graphics editing (Paint Shop Pro)
* technical drawing (Visio)
* sound editing (Adobe Audition)
* software development (Visual Studio 2008, CodeGear RAD Studio)
* video editing (VideoReDo TVSuite)
* OCR (Omnipage Pro)
* technical writing (MS Office 2007)

.... I can honestly say there is no NOTICEABLE difference. And that is what
matters to me.

I don't understand why people still parade around going...."OMG! XP is sooo much better then Vista..I downgraded ASAP!!"....If I understand correctly..no one forced you to upgrade. You are the foolish person who decided to install Vista on a subpar hardware machine. You see, the thing with technology is...It's constantly improving. Now how can you run the latest and greatest software and not the latest and greatest hardware? Yea it may be possible, and MS made it that as to not throw a lot of customers in the dust, but its not ideal. Get 4GB of ram and a dual core CPU, then you won't be talking trash about Vista anymore.

Well getting more powerfule is a subjective improvement, being more
power efficient is another subjective improvement and one I would side
with. If an os requires more power that's not very good.
