Vista license transfer

OK. I built a new PC. Full on quad core, 8800 GTX card. I've installed a copy
of Vista from my previous PC, which is now in bits on the floor. It will
become an Ubuntu file server.

I understood I could transfer the licence from that Vista install to the new
one, but I can't seem to do it. MS help system isn't helping.

How do I let MS know I want to transfer the licence ?

Thanks in advance

Generally you have to call the activation center, tell them you have
upgraded the hardware and need to reactivate.
If it is a retail verwsion, moving from one system to another should be OK.
If it is an OEM copy, you can't move it to another machine, EVER.
But if you only added/upgraded hardware...new RAM, Video Card or even
reinstalling on a new, bigger HDD can cause reactivation to be triggered.

Simply choose the option to activate by phone.
Call Microsoft at the displayed number for your region, normally done
in less than 10 minutes.

Otherwise post back with specifics of exactly what you are doing along
with the exact message.

Thanks all. I didn't realise I'd have to give them a call. Very old school.)

I'll call today and post back with how I get on.

Regards
