Vista is working poorly for me.

I loaded Opera and MS explorer now refuses to launch.
Adobe reader doesn't launch for Opera. It did
in previous MS operating systems.
MS media player doesn't launch as it should.

And what with the removal of file find in Vista SP1?
I use file finder alot. Do I have to buy
a third party search engine for my computer?
Any suggestions?

I have Vista Home Premium with SP1 and I have no problems with the Search
functions. WMP works fine, too. Check your computer manufaturer's website for
any driver or software updates to fix conflicts between SP1 and the
computer's software or drivers.

I'm using Vista with IE7, Opera, Netscape, Avant, Firefox, Flock and Safari.
Adobe Reader opens when a link is clicked in all of them for a PDF. Adobe
Reader 8.1 opened the document each time.

Thanks to both of you, now I can know my problems
are specific to my system judging by your comments.

I still will miss the file finder function which is a very
serious botch on my Vista experience.

The maker only offered two slight update files which I downloaded.
But do you have File Find? The search function I see is truly
sad.

What do you mean? If you click the Start orb and just start typing, a list
appears immediately which contains:

1/ files with the typed text in the filename

2/ files with the typed text inside

So if you click the orb and type "fred", you will get a list of all files
with "fred" in the filename and all files containing the text "fred".

Isn't this what you want? And, frankly, much more useful than XP's poor
excuse for a search?

While I missed that, I tried it (just now) and it is useless compared
to file find.
I do have some issues now with Google search and Opera though
I suppose I'll get them sorted out one or another. Perhaps
I'll download Foxfire/Mozilla as suggested by a window that
shows on the browser. It has been my habit using file find to reach in
the
browser cache at times or to pull out various things especially
pictures or find misplaced oddly named large download files or
yet again just help keep an additional eye on smaller spy
files.

With file find I was able to search for file sizes, file types,
in specific locations, dates, spans of time beyond just
the name.

My other complaints with Opera in Vista not operating Adobe
reader have been corrected by an additional version of the
reader being downloaded special. Understand I was using
MS Windows 98 up until a week ago. I've never tinkered
with an XP system.

However, Explorer is still not starting up. Not a big deal
as Opera still works.

If you use the 'Advanced Search' in Vista you can search for the files, etc.
better than XP, the search capablities of Vista are far superior to XP.

using it.
There are 2 ways to use Search function in Vista:
1) enter file name, name of program or document, etc in the Start Search
field in the start menu.
2) open a windows explorer folder or directory and enter name of folder,
file, program, document, etc in the search field in the upper right hand
corner. After that search is done you will find that there will be Search
Tools and Advanced Search options available to refine your search.

And the "metatag" abilities fine tunes Search beyond what XP and '98 are
capable.

With Vista Search you don't even have to hit the enter key to start the
search, Search will immediately look at the index key as soon as you enter
the first letter of your search.

I've found that the major problems that I had with Vista were directly
related to third party software or the computer manufacturer's drivers and
BIOS which the manufacturer fixed.

Vista outpaces XP and blows the doors off '98.

Also, The Help and Support of Vista is a big leap ahead of XP's and '98.

Yes, Agent Ransack seems to have what I want unlike the
search function which as far as I can tell is worthless.
The issue will be to see if the free version is crippled somehow.

Not even close to what I want. File Find used to and now the Agent
Ransack program allow me to sort for things of which I don't know the
name or the location. It is a rare search that I have a name given my
habits. Normally I Iocate the known by memory in which specific folder
I left the file in and a good long file name and this is how I'd
assume is how
most do it.

turning the machine all the way off helped I do not know.

It seems my experience isn't going to be so bad.

The new faster machine with its new Vista OS is certainly
an upgrade from my truly ancient Windows 98 machine.

Now I have to decide to either to put my old Office 2000 on this
machine or to get the new versions of Excel and Word.

Office 2000 will "generally" work on Vista but it's not supported. Outlook
2000 WILL have problems. You may need to set it up in Corporate/Workgroup
mode....
