Is Microsoft ready for Vista launch?

Is MS itself (departments other than OS.....) ready for Vista launch?

1) I am still waiting for drivers for my new Lifecams which was initially
promised by end of December and subsequently got pushed to January. Well
launch is next week and we have no new information from the website since
early december.......
2) SBS2003 still has not received new patch to fix the UAC prompt on login
and/or new ConnectComputer apps to join vista machines to the network. Yes,
we can manually join the vista machines to the network but it is not the SBS
way.... :)
3) WMDC still beta? Come on! We've been using WMDC B3 since October. If
there are bugs, fix them and release a new beta. If it is judged to be
release quality, then change the name to final! (The last can't be too
hard.......)

BTW, after installing the Intellipoint and Intellitype from MS for vista, my
machine won't go into screen saver or suspend...... Without them, the
machine goes into screensaver and suspend just fine.........

MS...... Are you really ready?

Lifecam drivers have been in beta for a long time now. It seems that they
are waiting to actually release them.

It beats me why they haven't released them. After all, almost all the MS
hardware products (even the gaming devices) have vista drivers now and they
are final.......

My LifeCam VX 6000 works fine with native Windows Vista drivers.
If there were a promise for RTM drivers due out by December, I missed it,
please post the link.
On the website I do see a reference for software being available in January
and February, but then January is not over and Vista is not released to the
general public.
We shall have to see what happens in the next 8 days.

Drivers are not available with x64 RTM....... The promise for drivers due
out by December was on the same website which subsequently got changed to
January.....

Even after the reboot? I know there are kludge to make this work but the
official SBS blog has mentioned that a patch is in the works. The patch
should also fix the UAC prompt due to the execution of the SBS login script
every login........ (Yes I have disabled login script for Vista machines
temporarily but there should still be a fix.....)

Hmm, I don't know much about SBS but It makes me wonder if this SBS *LOGIN*
script requires admin rights (it appears as if it does since it triggers UAC
prompt) and if yes - WHY?

A

Alexander Suhovey

Well, then it is a design flaw on part of SBS team. Logon scripts run with
credentials of a user who logs on and by requiring admin rights for logon
script they assume all SBS domain users are local administrators on their
computers. Startup scripts is what should be used instead to configure
system-wide settings on domain computers.

M

The current SBS2003 does require all domain users to be local admin
(although I agree that this is stupid and a risk). When the computer is
joined
to a SBS2003 AD domain, the connect computer script is supposed to configure
the domain users to be granted local admin rights......

So yes. The SBS2003 team needs to come up with a patch which fixes
this.......

How interesting.

You see, I was following Susan Bradley aka "SBS Diva" (if you are in SBS
community you should know very well who she is) blog for quite some time
(though right now I'm couple of months behind) and I don't remember her
mentioning this problem with default SBS2003 logon scripts.

That's particularly odd because she's also known for her strong support of
LUA idea/approach and for maintaining www.threatcode.com, "Local
Administrator/Power User Hall of Shame" web site. I don't see SBS mentioned
there either though there's a number Microsoft products listed on the site.

Vista is ready for launch because Microsoft says it's ready. Millions will
use it, and it is a work in progress. Nothing less. Nothing more. Doesn't
matter if drivers are ready, they want to launch and the people will come
and they will buy and they will have issues. Same thing with XP, Win 2000,
Win 98, Win ME, Windows 95...... and so on.... and so on...

M

mlai

Yes I know of her. But this is out of her control and one of the major
security risk of SBS2003 vs Server 2003 domains.....

OK, thanks for the info.

Good to know as from now on I'll be more careful in recommending SBS 2003 as
a solution for small businesses. Seems like it needs some additional work
initially to create custom GPOs instead of using default ones to be really
secure solution.
