Will Vista hit store shelves on 1/30, or not?

This afternoon, I went to the local Best Buy and asked a manager in the
computer department about the release date for the retail box versions of
Windows Vista. (I asked knowing full well about Microsoft's planned
January 30th retail launch for Vista; basically, I wanted to see if *they*
knew what *I* knew.)

His response: "February-ish."

(???)

He continued, "We probably won't have any copies in until after the 31st.
It all depends on what we get from Microsoft and when."

On the face of this, his response struck me as rather odd, given
Microsoft's big push re Vista -- he effectively said that Vista won't be
available in his store until sometime *after* Microsoft's 1/30 retail
launch.

Should I take the BB manager at his word, and not expect Vista in stores
until "February-ish", despite Microsoft's announced 1/30 launch for Vista
(they've announced a big "launch party" in New York on the 29th, for
crying out loud!) -- or is he somewhat misinformed, and should I expect to
be able to pick up a copy of Vista off the shelf on the 30th?

My best guess, fwiw, ignore the BB manager! There will probably be 'launch
parties'
everywhere on the 29th at midnite, and it will probably be available on the
30th, as
planned!

And armed robberies in the lines of those waiting outside Best Buy with cash
in hand.

Yeah! LOL.

I guess, as a consultant, I'd better be ready for the barrage of phone calls
on February 1st! :)

My advice is this; if you want Vista on January 30th, then preorder it from
Microsoft before January 25th. I talked to the presales department at
microsoft, and they said that they will ship Vista on the 26th to those
people whp preordered it on the microsoft site. That way, you will have it on
the 30th or the 31st and you won't have to fight the crowds.

Sounds like pure assumption. Vista was launched for Businesses November
30th, and available to all SA customers same day or even before that. So, I
wouldn't be surprised if you see Vista on shelves a few days before Jan
30th. I don't think they used the big gap that was December and January just
to be lazy and decided to deliver the retail boxes same day. Also, OEM's
have used the 2 month gap to test Vista so they can have systems preloaded
with and ready same day on display ready to be purchased.

I must be dense. Why are all you people rushing to get Vista?

Good question. I won't even consider buying it until Vista's SP2 is out.

What's your hurry? Do you like being a guinea pig for Microsoft?

Nothing wrong with that. 1/30 *IS* "February-ish" That just means it's
sometime
near February. Just as when I say noonish, I can mean anywhere from about
11:45
to 12:30 or so.

I see you're posting from Colorado. Colorado is a "shall issue" concealed
handgun license state. If you can stand up, see lightning, hear thunder, and
have the $100 permit fee, you can carry a concealed handgun.

Then, when the goblins demand your money outside Best Buy, you have a
choice. If you're inside the goblins simply take your money.

I wonder if there's a prize for the first retail copy that validates on the
Microsoft servers.

You have a problem with Colorado?

Since some TechBeta testers have already recieved retail product keys, the
first has already happened.
