If your machine can't cope with Aero it gets switched off automatically.
Premium has a few features more than Basic - check out the Windows site for
the full listing.

Home Premium reverts to Basic on any computer unable to use Aero. So unless
you need media center, which is included with Premium, you should not waste
money on premium. Get Basic if you must have Vista and you will be able to
upgrade online if you ever upgrade hardware. IMO, you should stick with XP
until you get a new computer. Basic is not worth the money & the upgrade
hassle.

How about the fact that at some point in the future, you may replace
your video card?

Home Premium adds more to Vista than just Aero, although certainly Aero
is a big part of it. But the other features alone are worth the
difference for many people. Certainly, all of the media center features
are present in Premium but not Basic.

Always think ahead. Don't buy just for what you need today, what will you
want in a year? There are more differences between VHP and VB than just
aero, and what if you decide to upgrade the video card. Besides Aero here
are some of the features in VHP that are not in VB:

1. Backup: Scheduled backup of user files, Incremental backup, Automatic
scheduling, backup to a network computer/device
2. Windows Media Center
3. DVD maker
4. Tablet PC support
5. Windows slide show
6. Meeting Spaces - can only view
7. Remote desktop client.
