VISTA BACKUP FAILURE - 0X80070002

Mike Coleman

I finally have VISTA running smoothly, but after the second
re-install, the backup routine no longer works. The error message
reads:

Windows backup did not complete successfully.

System failed to find the specified file (error 0x80070002).

In my opinion th ebackup routine is too automatic, not enough user
selectable features or settings.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem........Microsoft does not.

Mike,

I had the same problem. I solved it by checking all the drives involved for
errors (opening Computer and right clicking on the drive name -> Properties
-> Tools -> Error-checking -> Check Now..) It seems backup refuses to
continue if cannot copy a file you specified because of disk errors.

It proved that my C: did have some errors. Checkdisk runs on C: onlly after
a reboot, at startup. The other drives can be checked with Windows running.
After errors were fixed, backup ran OK.

I also agree with your comments about lack of feedback and user control in
the process.

Hope it helps you.

hi i have the same problem as mike and i ran the disk checking tool as well
and all is well there. But still I can not back up to ext hard drive or cd.
I even tried running restore a couple of times at different points and
resore failed to complete its task.
so has anybody else got some ideas?

I'm having the same problem; if I try to back up my files by going into
"Back up files or your entire computer" I get the following:

The backup did not complete successfully.
An error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the
error.
The system cannot find the file specified: (0X80070002)

Can someone explain what I should do next? I'm getting anxious about not
backing up. Thanks...
