Backup Error 0x80070002

I was using backup in Windows Vista RTM to back up files on a DVD and it was
on "Creating a shadow copy", when I got an error. The error was "The system
cannot find the file specified", with the error code of 0x80070002. Does
anyone know how to solve this problem?

Can you clarify whether you are using File Backup (Back up files button) or
Complete PC Backup (Back up computer button)?

Please contact me via email (remove "online") and include the following:

1. The problem description you put below.
2. A screenshot of your Disk Management screen showing disks and volumes.
3. Zip up the contents of %windir%\logs\windowsbackup\
4. Generate a log file using the instructions below and email it to me:

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Asr,
create a new key called LogFileSetting

Under LogFileSetting, create a new DWORD value called EnableLogging.
Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter 00000001 (hexadecimal)
or 1 (decimal)

Under LogFileSetting, create a new String value called LogPathName.
Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter C:\asr.log.

Next, reproduce the error. You should have a file called asr.log under c:\.

Hi, I have exactly same problem trying to backup files on Vista Ultimate. No
problem backing-up entire PC. Did you manage to resolve file backup? If so,
how?

I don't think I ever heard from the original poster. Can you tell me the
exact error message text you're seeing?

Identical to Armstrong108 case. Microsoft technical support have suggested
similar steps as you have indicated. I am awaiting their reply.

I take it they have your logs and are reviewing them now?

If it helps, we just tracked down the same error code (0x80070002) but I
don't think it was the same message text. The problem was that backup failed
to find a user profile path in the registry. What we think happened is an
account was created, used to log on at least once, then the whole home
directory was deleted. The user was pretty registry-savvy and cleared out
some old profiles on his own and solved the problem. This however might not
be the same problem you're having.

You were right. I have carefully examined the registry (using regedit) and
deleted two keys in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software//Microsoft/Windows
NT/CurrentVersion/ProfileList. One ended with .bak and another unknown which
is very likely for an account that I have created with admin class, then
deleted it as per Microsoft suggestion.

It looks like adding and deleting users need further examination by
Microsoft as it leaves keys in the Registry.

Thanks anyway.

At the very least, Backup should ignore this and proceed normally instead of
stopping altogether. We have a bug for this based on the previous customer's
complaint, and I've updated the bug with your report. I'll see about getting
another bug logged about leaving the registry remnants behind.

Do you mind giving me your case number? I'd be interested in reviewing the
details.

Are you saying it's still not working even after the erroneous registry
profile was deleted? That should have solved the problem. I would get in
touch with that person again and let him/her know that that the problem
still exists.

Also, for some reason I am unable to view these cases. They must be going
into a database that I don't have access to.

I have this exact same problem!

However, I have 2 machines, exactly the same; HP s7750.uk models
runningVistaHome Premium.

One is used for Photo editing, etc the other as a Media Center.

The photo editing machinebackupis running fine, though the Media
Center machine fails every time with 0x80070002.

I've created the asr.logfileas requested in the earlier posting,
anybody in a position to help with this?

Thanks,
Stuart

fed up with US technology English fella

Hi, After reviewing these posts and the date that they were entered i am
astonished that there is STILL no solution to what is a very serious problem.
I have reloaded Vista several times and have no problem doing a files backup,
i have not been able to do a new full system backup because of this error
since last reinstallation due to the 8007002 code. I have changed the system
by adding new software but cannot do a new full backup. Time to cosider
leopard and time tunnel if you guys cant get this bug sorted.

What is wrong with an alleged English fella who is fed up with US
technology? Use Arab's technology, some African technology might be even
more attractive.

Use Windows Vista Backup option, you idiot. It always works for everyone who
has a little bit of respect to the technology of the United States. Your
Vista most likely senses your subterranean IQ and refuses to budge.

Dear alexb, my comment was subtle tongue-in-cheek, not a slur but i take your
point. Apart from your country delivering its technology to Arab countries in
UN sponsored packages, I would agree they do not particularly have any to
call their own. I am quite sure that, if you ever left the US, you might see
this for yourself, perhaps could assist philanthropically. I am sure too
that, even with my subterranean IQ, I realise that vista has no sensory
capability. I do respect the US technology, and the Windows Vista Backup that
you suggest I use, is indeed the function i am referring to that has failed
to work, and that you failed to offer any constructive comments for, but
never mind. Oh, and i am sure that the Arab/African Americans in Microsoft
appreciate your comments on their intellectual ability. Nice.
