Visioneer 7100 Scanner Problem

Just bought a new Visioneer 1 touch scaner today from CompUSA. Plugged
it into the USB port and WinXP had no problem recognizing and installing
it. Then installed the software and then try to scan. Doesn't work. I
hit preview or scan in Visioneer's software program and get the
following error:

"An unkown error has occured.

The program has encountered an unkown error with the selected settings.
Reset the selected paramaters and try again."

I've tried hitting the reset button on Visioneer's parameter settings
with no help. When I try using Windows own scaning software or Jasc's
Paint Shop Pro to acquire an image, I hit prieview or scan and sounds
like its about to start, the light bar on the scanner moves about 1 inch
and then hangs up. I have to ctrl alt delete to shut down the program
after that. I checked Device Manager and it said the scanner is working
fine. The greeen light (not yellow) is showing on the scanner. I have
no other scanners or cameras installed or plugged in. I've tried
updating to the latest driver from Visioneer's site with no success.
Any suggestions? Could this be a hardware issue that I should take back
to the store for a replacement?

I don't know about the 7100, but I bought a 7300 a few
months ago, and found out it was a piece of trash.
I returned it and bought another brand.

Scott,

The 7100 DOES NOT work in Windows XP (specifically problematic with fast
user switching) and Visioneer does not support this scanner for XP.

I'd bring it back and chastise the Comp USA person who sold to you if they
knew you were using it with XP.

That is simply not the case. From the Visioneer manual...

"To use the 7100 OneTouch scanner and software, you need the
following:

IBM PC (or 100-percent compatible) Pentium or equivalent

Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Me, or
Windows XP

One available Universal Serial Bus (USB) port

Available internal memory (RAM):

Windows 98—32 megabytes (MB) or more

Windows 2000, Me, or XP—64 MB or more;
128 MB recommended for Windows XP

70 MB of free hard disk space

A VGA or SVGA monitor. Recommended settings for your monitor
are as many colors as possible—High Color (16-bit), True Color
(24-bit or 32-bit). Set the resolution to at least 800 by 600 pixels.
To set your monitor’s colors and resolution, open the Windows
Control Panel, double-click Display, and then click the Settings tab.

A CD-ROM drive"

I use a similar 7700 scanner here with XP HOME. One-Touch and .JPG export
compression can be quirky, but otherwise, no particular problems with the
scanner itself.

It has XP Drivers on its website for the 7100 plus its called one of
those "XP Certified Products" on the side of the box, and I don't think
Microsoft would allow them to say that if it didn't work in XP.

Did you read the manual first..

When installing USB devices, YOU INSTALL THE DRIVERS AND SOFTWARE BEFORE YOU
PLUG THE SCANNER IN..

READ THE F#$KING MANUAL..

Hey smartass, I just brought home a new one and installed it the same
way as before and it works fine, so it was indeed a defective scanner
before.

I went online to the Visioneer website to get info on the setup of this
particular model.. and surprize, it made clear that one should load software
and drivers first, and then connect the scanner.. 99.9% of USB external
devices will not work correctly unless the drivers and software are loaded
before connection.. I was not trying to be a smartass but so many people
fail to read the manual first, and then complain that the device will not
work.. I am pleased that your replacement scanner now works for you..

Yea, but the drivers from the original botched install were probably
already on the HD so I'd expect it to work the second time around.

Way to go.. I didn't mention that because it seemed heartless to spoil his
party, but the truth is out there..
