Missing Scanner

My Visioneer 7100 scanner USB cable was disconnected.
When it was reconnected, Windows added it as "Visioneer
7100 USB Scanner #2". The Original "Visioneer 7100 USB
Scanner" is not displayed in device manager. I have
disconnected the scanner, unistalled the software, and
rebooted. I then reconnected the scanner and reinstalled
the software. Device manager still only recognizes
the "#2" scanner.
How do I get rid of the original scanner and the #2 in
windows so that I can reinstall and have it recognized
as "Visioneer 7100 USB Scanner" rather than Visioneer
7100 USB Scanner #2"?

If it is working, consider leaving it as is. If it bugs you, then chances
are that "hidden" devices are not being shown in Device Manager. Open a
new, blank file in Notepad and paste this into it...

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd\ %SystemRoot% \System32
start devmgmt.msc

Save to a convenient directory (folder) as "show_devices.bat" (no quotes)
Double-click the file and it should open device manager.
Click the VIEW menu and click Show Hidden Devices.

Look at the IMAGING branch in Device Manager and remove the scanner.

Look at the other branches, especially USB and remove references to "unknown
device". Right click items and look at their PROPERTIES sheet to see if
they reference the scanner.

Turn off the Visioneer power, and disconnect both cables.

Reboot, and precisely follow Visioneer's procedure for installing the
scanner. The order in which software is installed and cables are connected
usually makes a difference.

To avoid problems in the future, consider leaving the scanner powered-up at
all times - even when the PC isn't.
