Visioneer 7100 Problem

Just bought a new Visioneer 1 touch scaner today from CompUSA. Plugged
it into the USB port and WinXP had no problem recognizing and installing
it. Then installed the software and then try to scan. Doesn't work. I
hit preview or scan in Visioneer's software program and get the
following error:

"An unkown error has occured.

The program has encountered an unkown error with the selected settings.
Reset the selected paramaters and try again."

I've tried hitting the reset button on Visioneer's parameter settings
with no help. When I try using Windows own scaning software or Jasc's
Paint Shop Pro to acquire an image, I hit prieview or scan and sounds
like its about to start, the light bar on the scanner moves about 1 inch
and then hangs up. I have to ctrl alt delete to shut down the program
after that. I checked Device Manager and it said the scanner is working
fine. The greeen light (not yellow) is showing on the scanner. I have
no other scanners or cameras installed or plugged in. I've tried
updating to the latest driver with no success. Any suggestions? Could
this be a hardware issue that I should take back to the store for a
replacement?

Did you unlock the carriage? Shipping lock may be on bottom of scanner.
Any shipping packing left in scanner?
