virus protection is out of date

Then ensure that your anti-virus software is up to date with the latest
virus definitions.
 
I've downloaded new anti-virus software (good for 2 years) and I'm still
getting the security icon stating virus protection not found. Now what?

In the Security Center control panel applet, go to virus protection and check he box
indicating you have anti virus and you'll monitor yourself.
