what's up with windows defender? it found a virus called 'virtumonde', but i
doesn't do anything about it. what's even worse, no one seems to have even
heard of this. the file it's attached to is ssttt.dll, but of coarse it's
locked out. only one other anti-virus program acknowledges its exsistance
(McAfee), but they don't tell you how to get rid of it. appearently this
puppy has been out there since 2004, but yet no cure. very interesting.

true virus? or conspiracy?

i tried what symantic suggested, but nothing was detected. how can one
anti-virus software detect the the Virtumonde.G virus, while another says
it's the Vundo virus, and others don't detect it at all.

either way, i stil have a problem and it only seems to get larger...oy vey!

You should read Tom's post again. As I read it, he said that the 'fix'
is a separate file (not part of the symantec product).

I tried the separate programs (individual executable programs that scan your
hard drive to detect traces of said viruses). In my case, Symantec
recommended me run a 'Vundo' removal program first and then a 'Virtumonde'
removal program. I followed all instructions to the letter, but neither
found anything. So now I’m back to the beginning. McAfee says I have the
Vundo virus, Windows Defender says I have Virtumonde.G virus, Avast! Says I’m
clean, Symantec says I have nothing, Trend Micro says I’m good to go...is
there anything I am missing? I’ve always been impressed with Microsoft and
the products/support they offer, but this a little odd to have all these
different vendors telling me all these different things.

Are we trying to propagate the transmittal of viruses, keep the anti-virus
community in business, or is there something more sinister at hand?

Read Hijack This! tutorial so you can use Hijack This! and post its log in
the Dell Forum ªt:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack

Get HijackThis.exe from
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/hjt199//HijackThis.exe

http://computercops.biz/HijackThis.html

Save it to C:\hjt (new folder) then Open it and select Scan and Save Log.

Note where you saved the log then send it to him as an attachment.

Put Hijack in the subject so he'll know it's not spªm.

Put Ron in the subject so he will see it.

You do not need to have a Dell to post but you will need to register.

i finally got the problem fixed. i did the community forum thing and ended
up at a website called 'bleepingcomputer.com' in the end, the thing that
fixed my computer was a little program written by a no-name. the fixing
program was no greater then 600k and it took less then 5 minutes for it to
remove all traces of the virus. now why couldn't the king and all the king's
men put humpty dumpty back together, when a lowly peasent was able to in no
time flat. i'm not impressed with the big names out there. they should have
been able to fix this little problem with ease.
