System Restore/Anti-Virus Problem

I have been having a problem that may or may not have something to do with
Windows Defender. I have been trying to narrow it down, but it is not
something that I want to deliberately repeat, so I have a wait and see
approach. The issue is this: The last 2 times that I did a Windows system
restore were after I installed WinDefend. Both times, I discovered corrupted
componets in my McAfee anti-virus program after the restore. Once, the html
component was corrupted and scan would stop midway with a error message. The
second time, the active shield component was corrupted and VirusScan would
not even open. This may just be an issue with my PC or with McAfee VirusScan.
A friend suggested that something may have interferred with the restore
process and necessary registry changes. He suggested that it might be Windows
Defender. I have no specific indications Defender is the cause, but have
there been any similar reports anywhere?

I don't think this is related to Defender but it is a fairly common "side
effect" of System Restore. System Restore takes a snapshot of your registry
and system settings but not much else. If your AV has updated since your last
restore point, the restored registry keys probably are not matching with the
data in the current files.I would suggest either undo the system restore and
try to fix the problem that caused you to use System Restore or reinstall
your AV software.

That's what I thought too. McAfee had updated before the restore, and when
it updated an entirely new DAT is installed, removing the old one. AFter the
restore, both DATs were in the VSO folder. I noticed that I did not have
this problem with 2 other programs that had updated, but they use incremental
updates and corrected themselves with a new update after the restore. That
makes me perceive McAfee as a weak program.

I just received a response that confirms a uninstall/reinstall is required
after doing a system restore from the McAfee forums. So this is definitely
NOT a Defender problem. Is is however, a PITA!

On Windows Millennium edition, using SR in precisely that way necessitates
reinstall of Windows when a certain popular antivirus product is involved.
McAfee is not alone in having this kind of problem.
