Virtual PC

I have a Gateway Laptop running vista and I have been trying to decide
between dual booting xp pro, or running it on Virtual PC. This is to solve
program compatibility issues with vista. I could not get xp to install on my
new formatted partition. When I tried to boot off the xp pro cd when it was
ready to install, it said it could not find any installed hard drives and
the installation quit. So because many people from this group recommended
it, I thought I would try virtual pc 2007. When I tried to install, I got a
message saying virtual pc is not supported on my operating system.(Windows
Vista Home Premium) Now I don't know what to do, I bought a computer that
will not run my programs, then I had to purchase xp pro and that won't
install either. Could someone please help!!!!!!!

Thanks, I did have that article for the dual boot with vista and it still
would not install. For some reason it can't see the hard drive.

Try a clean install (boot up with the XP disk, remove existing hard drive
partitions, reformat, then install XP).

However, are you sure that there are program compatibility issues with
Vista? What are the issues? Perhaps someone here can help if you describe
them.

It is my understanding that Virtual PC 2007 will work fine on Vista Home
Premium, but Microsoft will not help you with the product (support it)
should you have any problems with it.

And I should add that: Any problems you *do* have with Virtual PC 2007
can be posted to msnews.public.virtualpc , where you'll find lots of help.

It is very annoying that MS don't at least state that Virtual PC will run on
Vista Home Premium. Even if it is a unsupported option. I've now got Win98
to run quite nicely in Virtual PC on Vista which is more than it would do
when run natively on my new PC hardware. I am now able to use two old
applications that I have.

Click past the non-support message. VPC will install and run. The message
only means that Microsoft Product Support Services does not give product
support for VPC running on VHP, not that VPC won't run on it. Make sure
that your VPC 2007 is not a beta version. Installation on VHP was blocked
during beta. The version on the VPC 2007 homepage should be fine.

Know what you mean. I'm running both Win98SE and WinXP Pro in Virtual PC
2007, myself, but doing so in Vista Ultimate. I have long loved Sierra
PrintArtist for making cards, but it won't work properly on any Windows
OS newer than 98SE (and probably ME) and has never been updated, so I've
kept it on an old Pentium II box. Now I can run PrintArtist from within
Vista and can eventually dedicate the old Pentium II to playing around
with Linux. Having Virtual PC is great.

I use Print Artist 2003 and even still have version 4.01 on this machine
and both run fine using XP (and I have w2k and it works in that also).

Terry:

Very interesting. The problem, as I once experienced it when I moved up
to Win2K, was not in installation or using the PrintArtist in general,
but in printing out the results of my work. I did a lot of Googling back
then looking for a solution and could never find one, although my
Googling confirmed that my problem of not being able to print my cards
was a genuine issue with Win2000 and beyond. Due to my past problems
trying to use it with Win2K, I haven't tried installing it on Vista, and
I honestly can't remember if I tried installing it on XP, because all of
the information I had collected, plus my experience with Win2K, told me
I wouldn't be able to print my cards. Perhaps it is one of those YMMV
situations?

Quite possibly. What version do you currently use?

I just did a little "Googling" myself and noticed some reports of
printing problems. I also see they have Print Artist 2007 (version 21)
available. Mine is version 18. I haven't experienced any printing
issues, so I can only encourage you to try it again.

Thanks! Some of my advice got me into trouble with MS. It's good to be out
of jail now. (Just kidding!)

I had a health issue and am getting back to normal. Hope to post more
frequently soon.

What!? There's a PrintArtist 2007 out now!? What do you know . . . And I
had been of the impression that they were not going to continue its
development after PrintArtist 2003.
All I've got, though, is v8.0, said to be "Year 2000 compliant," for
"98/95/NT." Do you actually think this old version might work, and do so
without the said printing issue, in Vista?

Thanks, I did have that article for the dual boot with vista and it still
would not install. For some reason it can't see the hard drive.

If it is a SATA drive, maybe you have to install the SATA-drivers
pressing F6 with the bootstrap.

Possibly, your disk controller is SATA which XP cannot support from the
CD as it wasn't around back then.
During setup, XP asks you to press F6 to load 3rd party drivers.
Press F6 where prompted & insert your disk controller driver disk when
asked.

Well it's only $30, so I think it would be worthwhile to upgrade. And
whether it runs in Vista? Even what's supposed to run doesn't, so who
knows? I guess you could try it and see. Like I said, I still have
version 4 running in XP (a couple old designs that were too crazy to
reproduce).

Let me know if you get it running, or get the new version and it works
in Vista.

Take care,

$30? Cheaper than I would have expected, too. Thanks for all the news,
Terry. If I decide to try my 8.0 on my Vista, I'll get back here with
the results.

I know about those "health issues," having had my share of them lately,
too. Glad to hear you're far enough past yours to be "getting back to
normal." One tends to forget how nice "normal" *is,* until one *isn't.*
