As long as you have some sort of router built into the modem with an
ethernet connection to the computer it should just work, whether it's
vista, xp, MAC, Linux, Unix; whatever. All it normally takes is a browser
window to configure.

I've got Virgin Broadband via a router which is attached to the main PC and
this laptop conn ect through a wireless connections. HAd a few probs setting
up the wireless connection to begin with but eventually got it sorted and so
far no particular probs except it going slow at times. Sorry i can't be of
more technical help though.

Been using NTL/Virgin for years, never a problem in any OS.
With Vista I just installed & it set itself up.

Thanks Ray but is there any difference between the full version and the OEM
version which is on my friends new computer, why I asked is because I have
ordered the full version of vista home premium and do not want to download it
if its going to mess up my settings, I have Broadband cable which was
Blueyonder and now Virgin, with a Surfboard SB 3100 cable modem, and not
being an expert will probably not be able to put it right if it goes wrong

I have been using Virgin since 1997 and their broadband for one year now. I
had no trouble installing it onto my Vista laptop. I have Netgear Wireless
ADSL2+ Network Starter Kit, which is what Virgin recommended. So far,
everything has gone along well.

Hi Bill

You shouldn't have any problem with Virgin broadband. I have been with
Telewest broadband now Virgin for over 5 years, no problems setting up you
can either configure using their set up disk or set up manually, which is
what we do here as it saves loading all the un-necessary bits on to your
computer.

Using Vista Ultimate, Belkin Broadband Wireless router, Vista found all
settings with no input from me.

Any queries, please let me know.

Stuart

Thanks for your input, but it still does not explain why a tecky from virgin
says that he can not set up a broadband connection on a new computer with
Vista

after seeing an article on the BBC website, i think the issue lies in teh
Disks they dish out (which tend to install junk...) being incompatible - may
be they just need to be run in admin priviliatges or somthing. Whatever the
case, it's almost proabbly possible to instal it manually.

Because he doesn't have a script to read for Vista yet.

Their software probably isn't vista ready, but you don't need the software
for the new pc as long as the modem has already been setup under another OS
like XP.
If the moden is new out the box & unused & they only have vista, the tech
may well be right.
If the modem has been used, vista should work.

Thanks for all your replies, But what happens when its your first computer
and you are looking forward being on the internet for the first time, and you
are told ,"sorry cant connect ,"Tough!", It must be up to the shop or who
ever that supplies the computer with Vista to explain the problems that
arises with this program,as there is no mention from Vista itself on this
subject, as it must happen with other broadband connections

I take the attitude that it is up to the ISP to prepare - along with other
companies with software and hardware - to ensure customers are able to know
what to do... Some have done in plenty of time. some, for whatever reason,
appear to have dragged thier feet.

If the disks dont work after 30th Jan there is no excuse. And worst comes to
worst, the informatio on how to set it all up manually should be provided,
and when i say that i dont mean via 50pence per minute hotlines!

See http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=8579

The article says Virgin has "a few" who know how to work round the problem
of setting up the cable modem for first use under Vista.

Do you know someone with a laptop running XP who could come round? Once the
modem is registered with Virgin it should just work with any ethernet card
connection, as long as you have downloaded any necessary network card
drivers to get it working.

I have both Vista and Virgin and they work fine, although do get problems being kicked of broadband sometimes. But that has nothing to do with vista.

Hi

We are using Telewest now virgin media, no problems upgrading, Vista
automatically found the router/modem and connected.

The only thing is if your router has been secured when you used XP on your
old machine, the router may have been set to the old MAC address of your
network card. If this is the case you will need to set up your router to
accept the MAC Address of your new laptop.

I have a Motorola modem and Netgear router, both supplied by Virgin.

I run a wi fi radio, XP laptop wirelessly and XP desktop wired to the
router.

If I bought a Vista laptop would I be able to run it alongside these,
or do all the computers need to have the same operating system?

You should not have a problem but WiFi can be more picky than wired so
get an assurance from the store that it will be viable and they will
come and fix it for free if it's not. There are a few more glitches with
Vista for some people and one or two have had cards in the laptops they
bought which don't work so if you can get the store to demo it for you
(or at least a similar machine) then don't be afraid to ask, that IS
their job. They will check to see if your cash or credit card works :)
