Viewing images on web pages? Active x?

Images on the web are showing up with an x and the name of the file as
opposed to the picture that is supposed to be in that particular spot. How do
I fix this to allow these to show up? Is it related to the Active X controls?
Thanks

A red X is displayed instead of a picture on some Web pages in Internet
Explorer in Windows XP:

I failed in my original message to state that this happened after I got rid
of AOL on my computer. Prior to this I was able to see this images. Thanks
