Viewing HTML Mail in the Restricted Zone

I use Outlook 2002 with Windows XP Home SP 3.

Although I rarely receive email that I do not recognize, it only takes one
slip-up to infect a computer. For that reason, I read all my email in plain
text. I am very, very security conscious.

I have Outlook 2002 setup to open email in the Restricted Zone (of Internet
Explorer 7.) In addition, I have security software that can scan email as it
arrives and also when it is opened. If I leave the Restricted Zone set to
High (or customize the settings further to make it truly draconian) and let
my security software have at my Inbox, do you think it's okay to read HTML
mail as is, or am I safer to read everything in plain text?

Plain Text would be better if you are truly concerned about everything.
Outlook 2002 also doesn't have an Internet Picture Blocking feature (first
introduced in Outlook 2003) so picture tracking is possible when reading in
HTML format.

However, since you are talking about infecting your computer, then you can
continue to read in HTML format just fine as you cannot get infected by
looking at messages via the Preview Pane, even when they have malicious
attachments.

I did not know that the preview pane cannot run active content. Active
content is my biggest concern.

As for letting remote servers know that my address is good (picture
tracking -- or pixel tracking), that's certainly a valid issue, however,
it's less of a concern for me in the overall scheme of my security and
privacy practices.

Having worked with the Preview Pane for a bit, I have noticed that it continues to display the last email read, even when starting Outlook from scratch. Any way to clear the Preview Pane (i.e., make it blank)?

it should always display the last selected message, which for many people is
the last message read. There is no way to tell outlook to not start with a
selected message, other than starting in another folder or Outlook today. Or
turning the preview pane off of course.

the last selected message or didn't have the message list in focus.
