Viewing e-mail in Japanese Kanji

Periodically, I receive e-mail from Japan and it appears
as garbage. On my last computer I installed a plug in or
something that would convert the garbage to Japanese Kanji
characters. I can't remember the steps that I took. I am
running windows xp home edition. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks Bob D
