viewing an avi media file

Windows XP Pro, with all updates

A friend has given me an .avi file to view. It opens in Windows Media
Player. The file begins to play and I can see some video but then the video
freezes. The sound continues but there is no more video. I then tried
opening it in PowerDVD, some software that came with my computer. Same
thing happens. Starts out fine but very quickly I am listening to the file
the way you would on the radio and the screen stays frozen near the
beginning.

What is the problem here? I have seen this happen before on some files I
was not very interested in, but I would like to view this .avi file.

Thanks

Could be a damaged avi file.
Open it in virtualdub and scan for bad frames.

Thanks. I just tried to download the program but the site is down. I will

Most probable is that it is using a codec that is not supported -
likely the DivX one you can download from
http://www.divx.com/divx/?src=toptab_divx_from_/index.php
(bottom item - free download)
