It's generally known as the "left pane [of the window's explorer window]".
But I cannot think for the life of me how to get it back. The problem
happened to me once, but, although tonight, I managed to close it down in
one Windows Explorer session, it was back again in the next, so I cannot
explore the options of how to restore it.

Common Tasks. Go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/Show
