Vey Slow laptop

Daniel

Hi

I have a Compaq EVO N800v with XP SP2,
I have 256 ram and 40 Gig Hard Drive with
12 gig free.
I the past few weeks the laptop has been running
very slowly, taking up to a minute to open a folder,
even one without much content, and taking even longer to open programs which
used to take seconds.
I have defragged but that made no difference,
I have run adaware and spybot but found nothing.
Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be?

thanks

Daniel

Daniel:

Were those Ad-aware SE v1.05 and SpyBot S&D v1.3 and were they updated with the lates
definitions prior to running the scan ?

Did you dump the contents of the IE Cache and the TEMP folder and the perform a complete
Check Disk and a subsequent Defragmentation ?

1) Download the following two items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download SYSCLEAN.COM and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt488.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
SYSCLEAN.COM .

2) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
3) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode then shutdown as many applications as possible.
4) Using the Trend Sysclean utility, perform a Full Scan of your platform and
clean/delete any infectors found
5) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform
6) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
7) Reboot your PC.
8) Create a new Restore point

Anti Virus protection?? have you installed any new programs? you can
also run a hard drive check.

go here:

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

and download drive fitness test. it's a bootable system that will run a
hard drive check most likely not this but it's a quick way to rule out
hardware. also I have seen a few evo's lately come in with bad hard
drives.

if you need any help with it post here

Okay, still no luck,
I have tested the Hard Drive and found no problems,
the Adaware and Spybot were the latest with the latest updates.

I ran Sysclean and nothing was found.
Anything else I can try?

thanks

If you are sure your computer is 100% malware-free, check that the
drives are using the correct DMA mode. Here is a link to excellent
information about this by MVP Hans-Georg Michna:

Okay, that did it, the web page remined me that I had IAA running when I
installed SP2 aparently that causes error and the drive reverts to PIO mode.
I've been there before, I should have remembered.
I uninstalled and reinstalled it and all is good

thanks for your help

Yes! You are most welcome. I'm glad you got it sorted, and thanks for
taking the time to let me know.
