Very unusual startup problem.

The problem I'm about to describe seems to happen very randomly. Sometimes I
can boot up 5 times in a row without it happening, sometimes it does it every
second boot.

So the computer starts to boot up normally, no errors yet. When it comes to
the windows boot up screen, it starts loading normally, then the hard drive
LED starts blinking very rapidly, but no sound from the hard drive, just the
light blinking. While it's doing that, the windows screen stays on for about
30-45 seconds longer that when it boots without the problem. After it's off
the boot screen, everything is normal.

Then, looking in the event log under system events, there are exactly 20 of
these errors, always the same:

When it boots normally there are no errors. I've been using the computer
like this for about 6 months, the problem started occuring about a month
after I got the computer. The error is not related to any hardware changes,
since I only did hardware changes about a month after it started happening.
It does not seem to be hard-disk related, I have tested it using many
utilities and never had any problems with the drive. Ran bootvis. I have
reformatted, problem appeared about a week after the format. I upgraded
drivers and pretty much upgraded everything that might be related, except the
bios, which I'm not sure if it could be causing the problem.

Anyways, that extra boot time is really annoying, and it doesn't make sense.
I'm running out of ideas as to what could be the cause. Anyone have any idea?

I cannot offer advice however I have a similar problem with a PCG MB02
Intel Centrino Notebook since new. It has been back to the shop three
times and had just about everything replaced - still happens. I have
had enough of sending it back and just leave it on all the time now.

My problem is occurs during the boot sequence even before it starts
Windows - it can't find the hard disk so complains of "No operating
system found" - I reboot and if boots faultlessly maybe 1 in 3 times.
Once Windows starts it doesn't skip a beat - no problems at all.

My opinion is that it is a borderline timing problem between boot and
the hard disk and is a design problem. This notebook has very limited
BIOS tweaks so I can't fiddlw with timing settings.

There are many reports on this with nvidea chipset drivers.
People seem to suggest ensuring mobo bios is updated and chipset drivers
also.
Some apparently have found no cure, there is an ms kb article, for this and
usb drives, where they suggest it is a third party driver problem

Use these tools to check if its actually a harddisk problem or not:
http://www.hddlife.com/
http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/
http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/

if u dont find any harddisk alerts or problems suggest to set pagefile in a
different drive and deselect the present drive used for paging once after a
reboot u can set it back or continue ur choice. u can do this from my
computer properties (rightclick) advanced > perfomance settings > advanced >
virtual memory change.
& unfortunately if u find any alterts or warnings then your harddisk is
dying, Backup! immediately.

Hope this helps...,
