OK I've set everything to auto and it still blows the laptop away in Safe
Mode.

However....

Running anything, it appears, blows the laptop away in Safe Mode. Examples
are:-

Disk Clean-up
Disk Tools - Bad Sector search

It's almost like there's no temperature control on the processor in Safe
Mode and so the laptop just shuts down to prevent major damage. If I reboot
into normal mode straight after a shut off in Safe Mode the laptop boots
just fine. But if I try to repeat an F8 safe mode boot after it shuts down,
the laptop either fails to get past the POST, or it loads the basic list of
drivers and then shuts down.

I've run a bad sector search whilst in normal XP mode and that didn't find
anything wrong with the drive.

I'm hoping that Robin Walker, who's responded elsewhere on this thread might
have some other thoughts.

Hyde.

OK, late last night (UK time) I downloaded the complete MSAS program to my
local drive.

Disconnected my ADSL connection.
Uninstalled the existing MSAS configuration using the link in the program
group.
Ran Registry Mechanic V5 to see if any debris had been left from the
uninstall.
RM V5 found over a hundred custom controls and all the program shortcuts
still in place which I then asked RM V5 to delete.
Used Explorer to see if any MSAS folder structure was still evident and it
was, with a good few files still there including those in the sub-folders
shown below. I deleted these too.
I then rebooted the laptop.
I then turned AVG Free off.
Ran the install for MSAS.
Rebooted the laptop with all functions allowed to run.
I then ran another Full Scan from MSAS in normal XP mode overnight.
This morning it reported a clean system (As it has done all the way
through).
I powered down the laptop and left for around twenty minutes.
I booted the laptop and timed the boot process (55 seconds to a state where
I could load an application).
I then actioned a shut down and restart, and again timed the reboot process
(60 seconds to a state where I could load an application)

MUCH BETTER! :)

I'll be keeping an eye on things over the coming weeks/months and see if
this sort of performance remains.

I don't think I'll be doing any Safe Mode tests as I believe there is
something more fundementally wrong with the laptop and power management in
this mode. I've never used Safe Mode in the three years I've had this
laptop, so I can't say if the shut down problem in this mode has always been
there, or it is a more recent issue.

Thanks to all who contributed suggestions.

Regards
Hyde.

Back to slow loading again... :-(

Nothings changed over the last few days except that AVG Free has downloaded
some updates to the virus signatures.

Laptop took over two minutes to load up the MSAS icon in the system tray
having loaded all the other system tray icons and I couldn't start any other
application until the MSAS appeared in the system tray.

Not a happy bunny again.

If I try to shut down the laptop whilst the MSAS is still trying to display
it's icon in the system tray I get a dialog to end the program...

GIANT Antispyware Data Services

Is this what's taking so long to load?

Hyde--I see you are on the current code version. Can you check with
definition version you are on?

Go to help, about, and see whether you are on 5745? If not, please go to
File, check for update, watch what happens, and return to Help, About.

One theory I've got that might explain your experience is that the program,
under some circumstances which I don't fully understand, checks for
definition updates on loading. We know from long experience that the
definition update process can be balky, and can involve high CPU usage, at
times.

Hi Bill

I've checked the Help about...

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.615
This version expires on: 31/12/2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5745 (15/08/2005 17:42:59)

So I guess that blows that theory :-(

I can confirm that the laptop does not connect to my ADSL service during
boot-up. It's something I manually activate, so any software that's looking
for an internet link on boot-up will fail, but from your comments that looks
not to be the case?

As I've said before this only happens when I select the XP "Turn off
Computer" and "Restart", instead of the more usual, "Turn off computer" and
"Turn off". The exception to this is when I've actioned a "Turn off
computer" "Turn off" after a failed restart from the first option described
above. Then the next clean boot also takes ages, and only a Log off,
actioned twice allows all the System tray applets including MSAS to load in
an exceptable timeframe.

I hope that helps

Regards
Hyde.
