Verifying connection speed

I've recently installed Vista HP 64 on my PC. How do I check a connection
speed?
When I click under 'Networks' in Control Panel I get only data pertaining to
a speed of a router I'm connected to, but not re speed of an ADSL delivered
by my IP.
Also, how can I verify an ACTUAL connection speed rather than the one
CLAIMED by my IP?

Try something like http://www.speedtest.net/
