There are some apps available that will check to the NS but not to the
specific machine; that can't be done.
It's a lot faster and less hassle to send a mail & see if it bounces.
Normally the bounce will come back in just a few minutes but can take
longer. No bounce only means the mail was received; N OT that it was read or
reached the intended recipient, same as the MX and NS server apps.
Try looking up the email address on a search engine and see what you get for
links. It may be an abandoned account, meaning the mail is still accepted
but no one ever reads it. Or a full mailbox or one of many other reasons,
including the account having been compromised.

I don't think it even means that: many servers, especially corporate and
academic ones, send no response when they receive email for dead or
invalid accounts.
