I've just installed some updates from MS and now whenever I try and
right-click in a Explorer window to paste a file I've copied, Windows
Explorer freezes (it never unfreezes no matter how long I leave it) and some
wierd file "verclsid.exe" appears in Task manager. Are these related? Why is
my Windows XP freezes up like this?

I can't copy this file using the Windows interface, I have to open a CMD
window, navigate to the folder of choice, and from the command line (!!)
copy the file to its location. This is crap!

Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks,
Alain

I notice after performing the manual, command line level copy, I can now
copy from Explorer again.

Whadda going on??? If there's someone from MS reading this please take note:
I'm not the first person to report Explorer completely locking up when
performing simple tasks!

you can do the following if you’ve been affected by MS06-015:

- (If you have multiple user accounts set up) Log onto the computer using an
account with Administrator privileges

- Click the Start button, then click Run and type "regedit" at the prompt,
without the quotes; this will start Registry Editor

- Locate the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached key in Registry Editor

- Right click on the key and select New / DWORD Value

- Rename the resulting value
"{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
0x401", without the quotes

- Right click the value, select Modify, and type "1" into the Value Data
field

- Close Registry Editor

Yes.

Why is my Windows XP freezes up like this?

Because you trusted MS to patch your OS.

Try one of the following:

1.) Change "verclsid.exe" to "verclsidold.exe"

2.) Uninstall KB908531, KB911562, and KB912812, and reboot. Then
reinstall KB911562, and KB912812, and reboot.

3.) Muck about in the registry and make the following change (courtesy
of Stephen Hui [MSFT]):

- (If you have multiple user accounts set up) Log onto the computer
using an
account with Administrator privileges

- Click the Start button, then click Run and type "regedit" at the
prompt,
without the quotes; this will start Registry Editor

field

- Close Registry Editor
