Using two hard drives, one as a duplicate

I ordered my first computer with two hard drives, intending to use the D:/
drive as a backup for the C:/ drive. The salesman said it couldn't be done. I
knew nothing about computers and less about DOS. I think it came with 3.3.
Soon, without knowing what I was doing, I had the drives working as I had
intended. Both had identical information. This worked through DOS 4.0, 5.0,
6.0, and then into Windows 3.1, 3.11, and 98SE. It saved me twice when the
C:/ drive quit.
I have no idea what I did to get them working together like that, it's
been many years and I didn't know what I was doing. But it worked.
Now I have XP Pro, two new drives, and I can not figure out how to get
the D:/ drive to mirror the C:/ drive, all by itself, so if the C:/ drive
quits I have an up to date drive still running and with all my data intact.
Can anyone help me with my problem?
