using msconfig

Hi

I made adjustments to my start-up process using MSconfig.

On reboot xp didn't like this and said that it was running the system in
selective start-up, which meant that it didn't find the ASDL modem attached
to the USB port

The only way to stop this is to select normal start-up and then it loads up
all the start-up files.

However for some strange reason now the system will only find the modem if i
boot the computer twice. It is totally bizarre?

On first boot, both lights on the modem come on then go out when the
'Windows XP is loading' screen is on - and nothing seems to prompt the
system to think the modem is there.

On second boot, no lights come on, then on win xp screen one light comes
on - and once into the system the modem works perfectly.

Does anyone have any idea what has happened?

Cheers

The message about being in Selective Startup is a normal message and is
not the reason it didn't find the ADSL modem. You've apparently stopped
something from starting that you shouldn't have.

Yes, see above. To look up items you find in Startup, here are some

This sounds like you may have a hardware problem, but it could also be
caused by malware. Since we don't know anything about your computer's
hardware or software, it's not possible to be more specific.

Hi

( Sympathy response)
I've got a BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL Modem and that does the same, but I just
unplug it and plug it back in after a few seconds out of laziness, but you
could put the modems .exe file in the "Startup Folder" for a quick fix "till
someone sorts you.
