Using laptop to distribute IP address

I have ICS enabled for my wireless connection on my laptop. I am connecting
another machine to the ethernet port (using crossover). It fails to aquire a
network address I think. After a short delay it says "Limited or no
connectivity".

How do I get it to assign an address? Do I need to change a setting on my PC
or other machine?

If ICS is enabled on the wireless connection you won't get any addresses
assigned by the wired connection. ICS will give out addresses on only the
active, sharing, network connection. You could try manually assigning an IP
address in the proper range but if the only error you have is the "Limited
or no connectivity" error (that is, everything else works as you want it to)
then don't bother.

Thorpe,

If your computer is getting "Limited or no connectivity", you either have a
problem with the ICS server (your laptop), or with connectivity between the two
computers. Is this a tested crossover cable?

Let's look at "ipconfig /all" from your computer, to start.

Well, the machine connected through the crossover cable is my PlayStation 2
console. In the settings on that machine you can set it to automatically get
DNS, DHCP and all other IP addresses. I guess that doesn't work if you do it
automatically? Can you provide any more information now that I have said
this? Thanks.

Well, Richard pointed out a detail that I missed.

If you're going to enable ICS on the WiFi connection, but use Ethernet for the
PS2 network, you'll need to setup a bridge between Ethernet and WiFi. Or
designate Ethernet as the ICS sharing interface. What are you connecting to
WiFi?

I am connecting my PlayStation 2 through to the ethernet port of my laptop. I
then want the communications from that to go through to my wireless
connection on it (which is configured for my router) since that is how I
connect to the Internet.

OK, do you mean that your laptop is an ICS client? Meaning that you have
another computer in the house that's an ICS server? If that's the case, you'll
have to bridge the two connections in your laptop.

You have a tricky setup there, so the more details you can provide, the easier
it will be for us to help you.

I am not connecting my laptop to another computer. I am only connecting my
PlayStation 2 to my laptop which is then wirelessly connected to my router.

OK, so where is ICS involved? It sounds like the laptop is to be an ICS server.

If that's true, you run the Network Setup Wizard on the laptop, and specify the
wireless connection as incoming, and the Ethernet connection as the connection
used to share the service.

What is the IP address of the wireless connection? If your WiFi router is using
subnet 192.168.0.0/24 (192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0) there's a problem.

Let's look at "ipconfig /all" for the laptop first.

I did run Network Setup Wizard and both connections work now. I can
successfully use my PlayStation 2 online. I will send another reply if I need
any additional help.
