IP problem

Hi,
Setting-up a small home network(peer-to-peer), 2 Desktop, 1 Laptop, linksys
wireless-G router(w/ 4 port switch), modem. All PCs assign unique names,
given the same Group name, All PCs have XP SP2, Run network setup wizard on
all three machines, TCP/IP config. to Auto. assign IP Address. Modem is
attached to Router by
cat5 cable(internet port), 2 Desktops attached to Router ports(Ethernet).
All PCs connected to the Internet & brousing O.K. except for intermitent
break in brousing. Laptop is connected wireless(obviously I did thewireless
config. also).

My problem is I am unable to see the PCs on the network. I run Diognostic
tool & IP Address failed on Dasktop "A". Ping the Address of the Desktop from
the Desktop & I get "Invalid destination etc.". Ping desktop Address from
Laptop & Iget "Unreachable .....".
From Desktop "A" I Click "Start/Run" the type "\\name of desktop B then
press enter & I got "Path could not be found". Interesting observation, ping
127.0.0.1 on Laptop & Desktop "B" & all is well no loss, however when I
ping 127.0.0.1 on Desktop "A" it timed out, none received, all 4 loss.

The Router is using the Modem address as its gateway address & the PCs using
the Router address as their gateway address, I believe this correct.

I've mess around with Norton Internet Security firewall, no success, I might
not have done all what is required. I've tried "ipconfig /release & ipconfig
/renew" to no avail.

Pinging 127.0.0.1 (or localhost) checks the computer whose key board you are
operating - it verifies correct TCP/IP installation. If you cannot
successfully ping 127.0.0.1 on "A" - check "A" TCP/IP properties.

Awai,

To start, please un install NIS. Third party personal firewalls represent
probably the biggest single source of problems reported here. Follow detailed
instructions from Symantec.

If no help yet, look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config
server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

Hi Again,
I disable Norton Firewall on the individual Machines, run Network Diagnostic
tool, all tests were passed. I am now seeing all PCs on the Network, its a
little early to say whether the intermitent break in Internet brousing has
stopped.

Many Thanks for the prompt & effective responses.

Hello,
Web pages are loading slower than usual, any suggestions

Patrick

Patrick,

Maybe some details can help us here.
# All web pages, or just some?
# Initial page in the web site, or all pages within that web site?
# Content of website? Lots of graphics? Graphics from other websites maybe?
# All computers? One computer?

Web pages are Internet content. Your original problem was with your local LAN.
I'm not sure what changes you could have made to affect your local LAN access
that should affect Internet access. Try and reason what changes you made.

The problem has been resolved after re-starting the two machines that were
loading slower than usual.

For information purpose, it was happenning with the initial page, some pages
with high graphic contents and as well as this site/page/community in which
we post these threads & communicate/interact.

Anyhow all is well now .

Thanks for responding quickly.

That's great news, Patrick. Thanks for providing the update, and the diagnostic
details.

I'm still having intermitent break in internet brousing. Last time I
experience a break, I immidiately "ping" desktop A, desktop B, modem, router
from the laptop as well as loop-back(127.0.0.1). All packages were received
on all machines except the router which timed out. Its a linksys wireless-G
router. I checked the router settings, all seems o.k. to me. Host name in the
settings is left blank, I don't know if that would cause a problem, I believe
that is optional.

Any suggestions?

Patrick,

If you're having problems with Internet connectivity, try diagnosing the problem
with PingPlotter. Get PingPlotter (free) and start it pinging a DNS server that
your ISP provides. When you see a problem with your Internet, see what PP
shows, and where the problem is.
