router not assigning IP address to laptop

what would be some possible reasons why a laptop would not be getting
assigned an IP address from a router on a home network? I have a home
network consisting of a desktop pc running winXP hooked to a cable modem and
router. I also have a wireless router (with dhcp disabled) attached to the
main router like a hub. I use this wireless connection when I occasionally
use my laptop. Everything works fine except for my wife's laptop which is
running winXP. The laptop is configured to obtain IP addresses automatically
but for some reason is not being assigned an IP address from the main router.
The IP address that show up when I run the ipconfig/all utility appears to
be the WAN address not the LAN address. Also, no gateway address
appears????? Please help.

Is your wife's laptop using a wired or a wireless connection? If it
is a wired connection is it plugged in to the main router or to the
wireless router? What happens if you plug it into the other router
and reboot?

Right-click on the icon for the network connection on the laptop and
choose Repair. Does that do anything? If not then right-click again
and choose Status. The information there will show you which i.p.
address it is using and what the DHCP server's address is etc.

What happens if you connect your wife's laptop directly to the cable
modem? Does it work properly then?

Good luck

it is a wireless connection. In the task bar it shows up as connected with excellent signal strength but I was unable to ping any WAN or LAN address.
When connected with ethernet wire it works fine. I got so frustrated that I
just restored my laptop. The factory settings are the operating system on C:
and all programs on D: Restoring the C: did nothing but when I did a
complete restore of both C and D everything worked fine. I'm glad everything
works fine now but I'm still curious as to what would prevent the computer
from finding the DHCP server (router). Does it sound like misconfiguration
or file corruption??

Misconfiguration or drivers for the wireless NIC would be my prime
suspects.

Good luck
