Using external FTP client to publish FP

R

Richard Ruda

We maintain certain key web pages with FP 2000 . This works great. We are
experimenting with updating our website using FTP (actually using XP's FTP
client) instead of the inbuilt one in FP. We don't use any of FP extensions.
Now it's easy to pick and choose changed/new files and simply copy them
over....But we're not sure about all those directories (_borders ; _derived
and so on - there are about 7 some with sub directories). For example we do
use FP's borders so for example if we make a change to our borders in FP do
we have to upload those directories as well and which others??

Thanks
Richard

If you can publish with FP to your host with FP's FTP mode, you are better off continuing to use FP,
since you are using theme, shared borders and FP will know which files need to be uploaded as you
make change to your local version. If you manually upload via FTP you may not always upload the
required files, plus FP will not have a record of what has been published.

Thomas,
Thanks for your reply.
1) we used to use FP ordinary publish - that is publish to www.wyz.com.
The problem is that our ISP's upgraded server no longer runs FP extensions,
however we no longer use them anyway (we used to 4 years ago but those files
are deleted) ; so what we first did is disable FP Server Extensions. However
when you try to publish to the server using FP Publish, FP complains and
advises that the command cannot be completed ("make sure FP Server
Extensions are installed"). Surely if you disable this in Tools/Page
Options/Compatibility then it's not going to look for it on the destination
Server?

2) We then tried to publish using FP's FTP mode (publish to
ftp://www.wyz.com). This starts OK but FP is a hog and likes to take control
of all files in the directlry so when it comes across files that are not on
local server (we use other software to populate this directory), FP
complains "xyz file exists in destination server but not on current web -
would you like FP to remove it" This is crazy as we have to click NO a
zillion times to go through all those other files.

Any advice... Our ISP is creating a less secure Server for FP users only but
we would prefer not to move and hence we are trying to manually FTP. By the
way we do not use FP themes; the only FP aid we use are borders.
Thanks

You can still have FP set to use extensions and then publish via FP's FTP mode.

I agree that this is pain, so I understand why you want to get away from this. However you could
create empty folder locally and make it a subweb, then FP will not attempt to publish.

What does you host mean by "less secure server for FP users"? Have the FP extensions installed and
configured correctly doesn't make the server any less secure then allowing FTP access.

I think if you want use FTP in the way that you have mentioned, that you should replace the shared
borders with FP Include Page component or the Dynamic Web Template if using FP2003.

Some of the FP folders do not need "publishing" to a non FP SE server
Do not transfer any _vt* folders or _overlay folders
You can omit the _borders folder IF all it has is your shared border pages and/ or include pages
- their content is already incorporated in your main pages
You will need the _derived folders (your nav bar images) and any _themes folders

you apply a shared border through Format > shared borders; specify left/top
bottom/right (or combination)....when you upload the page with the shared border
the "shared" page in _borders is invisibly uploaded with the page using them. so
no, you don't uploaded them separately.

That might be the only one you would use (it doesn't require FP extensions) the
others like _derived, _private etc are to do with the server extensions, so they
aren't necessary, however when you create a web in Frontpage it automatically
"prepares the folder" for the web by putting these files in the folder of your
web site, and they upload automatically. but I don't see the harm in deleting
them. Using external ftp would have corrupted the server extensions anyway if
you'd had them installed.

Incorrect

You always have to upload the _derived folders since they contain the nav bar images
