Using Bootdisk CD

R

RScotti

Hi,
I can't seem to install the MS Recovery Console. I have put in a new motherboard, a hard drive twice and a Firewire that
all were defected.

I do have the Bootdisk.com disk but was told it was for Win9x. Is there anyway I can use that if I go to the Windows
folder and run the XP versions?

Is there another program I can purchase that will do this.
I mainly want to use my ERUNT backup in case my windows doesn't start but would also be nice to access the files the MS
Recovery Console does

Have a good day,

The easiest way to access your files in case Windows will not
start is to boot the machine with a Bart PE boot CD (which
you must manufacture yourself). A very powerful tool!

It says Building from an OEM version of Windows may mean trouble.

I don't think I can "build" CORRECTLY from Bart PE. I have an OEM with recovery Disks NOT a Windows CD.
I put in my first disk but it didn't take any files from it. Only from C:\Windows.

When I did build it only had a few folders in Windows x:\I386\System32 and Programs but NOT C:\Programs
I need the whole Windows folder and can't find it went through A-Z for drives Only had B & X.

I tried to run Chkdsk /f but it wouldn't run. On the RC it does run. I could run Notepad etc.

I guess I can't read the directions right. Can't see where this is better than the RC. I can get all my stuff from that.

I even tried to get the MS Windows PE but couldn't find out where to Download it.
The web site only gave a description of the program.

It related to my question only since you gave me the info to use Bart PE. I was trying to tell you when I tried to set
it up I got this warning.

Yes I agree and will be buying Vista retail Home Premium for that reason.
Not until they have my sound drivers though.
I wish I knew someone that has this but everyone I know has an OEM

I thought it would seek out my OEM I386 folder on my e drive but it didn't.

Because you recommend the Bart PE CD. I just wanted to let you know it wasn't working like the MS Recovery Console.

I was trying to tell you I also went to the Windows PE site to try and get the Microsoft version. And at this point was
no longer at Bart PE site.

Do you have an XP installation CD, either OEM or retail? If so just boot
from it and run the recovery console. The recovery console doesn't have to
be installed. If all you have is a recovery CD then borrow an installation
CD from someone and make a copy of it. The CD in itself doesn't mean much
without the product key. Any XP installation CD will work for access to the
recovery console.

Hi Rock,
Maybe you have an answer to this.
I have the installation files in my I386 folder but after I install it I gust get a blue screen.
that says:
Compusa also tried this with a XP CD.Same message.
a problem has been detected & Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you seen this stop error restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these
steps.

Check for viruses in your computer.
remove any newly installed hard drives and hard drive controllers.
Check HD to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run Chkdsk /F to check for hard drive corruption and than restart your computer.

I have been following this thread, but sorry I don't have any suggestions
other than to just have an XP installation CD available and boot it when you
need to access the recovery console.

Hi Rock,
I think Kerry narrowed down my problem in my other thread.
I need the drivers according to this web site:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-021736.htm
But I can't seem to get them from either HP or WDC and I only have a CD/DVD and NO floppy drive.
I never had this problem with my other drive before they replaced it with this one.
Could always access the RC .

Hi Rock,
Will that be different than installing them from the CD?
If so I can try to ask my cousin if he will give me a copy WITHOUT the key he might do it.

It runs just the same. When installed you boot the PC and invoke the
recovery console from the boot loader screen. When not installed boot from
the XP installation CD and take the first R for repair. That is the only
difference. There is no real advantage to having it installed. Just make a
CD copy, not a file copy of his XP disk. You don't need his product key,
and it doesn't matter whether the type of XP on the installation CD matches
yours - not for purposes of accessing the recovery console.

If drivers need to be loaded, then you have to have a floppy drive.
External USB drives are low cost or else you slipstream then into the
installation CD, but since you don't have an installation CD you can't do
that.

Thanks,
I do have an external HD but ads you know I don't have the installation CD.

Won't I need drivers for this to work?
I thought that was at least part of my problem. Now that Vista is out
I may be able to buy an OEM CD at a reduced price.

Yes, you will need to load drivers for the SATA drive for the recovery
console to see it. I forgot you are running a SATA drive. So that would be
one difference.

Hi Rock,
Well I am back to square one. I don't know how or where to get the drivers. I only have a DVD/CD and floppy drive.
Tried HP and all they said was to do a non destructive recovery. I have done three destructive recovery's and didn't fix
this.
