On one XP pro computer, it starts up showing all user icons. click one to
log in. great.

On another XP pro computer of ours, starting up, only gives me a message box
asking for user name and password. how can I get it to give me user icons?

Click Start, Help and Support, search term Welcome Screen, click "Turn
the Welcome screen on or off" link.

Start/Control Panel/User Accounts, then select: Change the way a users log
on and off

Sign in to an Administrator account. Once Windows has loaded, go to Control
Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users logon. You can select the
Welcome Screen there.
