XP boots but won't show desktop items then logs out

I'm running Vista and XP on a Toshiba laptop.

Installed Symantec Antivirus on the XP side. It updated with LiveUpdate and
then asked for the computer to be restarted. When I did, I can get to the XP
welcome screen, but when I pick my user profile it goes to the desktop, shows
only the wallpaper (no icons or items) then saves my settings and logs out to
the welcome screen again. Can't start in safe mode. Don't remember my
administrator password (pressing enter did not work). Somehow this wiped out
all system restore points.

So my question is - how do I get XP to start up again? The Vista side works
fine.

Thanks in advance for trying to help me out.

Look into repairing/replacing the userinit.exe.
