Hi, i restored windows XP Home on a Compaq Presario, and while installing a
webcam software the machine rebooted and stopped showing the users on the
logon screen (with icons for the users).

I am unable to login to the machine in normal or safe mode and wanted to see
if there is someway of logging in with out recovering the PC again.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

In safe mode, can you log in as "Administrator" with a blank (no) password?
If so, create yourself a new user with Administartor privs and make sure it
has a username completely different than the old usernames. If by some
miracle you have performed a non-destructive restore - then you can at least
take ownership of the old files in c:\documents and settings\ and at least
get your files back. You will likely be rebuilding said users looks/feel
from scratch and it sounds like you may be missing other vital things (like
registry entries and the likes that made some of your installed applications
work - meaning you may have to reinstall all applications as well as updates
for everything.)
