userinit problems - xp logs off immediately after log on

Hi

My problem is similar to previous posts, but also different. I've seen
there are some really helpful people on here, hope someone can help.

1) Background
I'm running XP Pro SP2. I use Ad-aware SE, Spybot, and Symantec Norton
Internet Security regularly without any problems. Last week I installed
and ran Tenebril's Spycatcher. Also no problems. The next day I
installed Security Task Manager (i shouldn't be so paranoid). I ran it
to have a look at hidden processes but didn't change anything. The next
morning I couldn't log in anymore

2) Problem
From the welcome screen, i log in as administrator (that's the only
account), my desktop flashes for a second, and then I get logged off
automatically.

I understand from previous posts that spyware checkers can corrupt
userinit values by removing blazefind. I don't know if this is what
happened, since the problem arose only two days after I used
Spycatcher. A lot of suggestions involve accessing the registry, using
safe mode, and replacing wsaupdater with userinit.

3) Trouble fixing it

I can log in using safe mode. (A lot of other people with the problem
can't.) Spycatcher log has no record of Blazefind or its removal.

In safe mode, I don't get the option to Run a system file checker. Run
doesn't come up as an option in the start menu.

I'm scared to use a restore point because someone posted that when they
did this they couldn't log in to safe mode anymore. (ie, the problem
got worse)

I've searched the whole system for a file with wsaupdater in the title
(alledgedly the problem file) but there isn't one.

ANY SUGGESTIONS? I'm IT illiterate compared to most people on here.

Also, while in safe mode, i have access to my files but can't back them
up on CD. It recognises the files in CDs, but when it tries to write
(even on to brand new cds) it says there is no CD inserted... Any
suggestions for backing up while in safe mode also welcome.

Thanks very much in advance!

Hi again.

I have figured out the problem. I uninstalled TENEBRIL SPYCATCHER in
safe mode, and I can now log in normally (fingers crossed the prob
doesn't return).

Stay away from this application, even though it has excellent ratings
at download.com, znet etc

Cheers
R
