Download my new userinit fix from here http://www.ms-mvp.org/ this file
works for SP2 and SP3 only. READ the enclosed instructions. If you have SP1
do not use this file. If you need any other version then email me using the
link at the bottom of my webpage. Your issue is caused by a malware
infestation. Once fixed you will need to use my Remove-it software, it will
remove that malware from your system. Choose yes for all options when
prompted. Download it here http://www.ms-mvp.org/

Because I bought it 1 month ago you idiot. Why are you trolling me? You
don't know enough about the situation to comment on it so butt out. For
example you don't know what a domain pointer is so you stupidly made this
foolish post. Had you known then you would know that my domain

enough then you would know the history between me and the troll MVP's listed

Please explain yourself.

My posting asks a question. Contains no statements about other people on the
newsgroup(s) who I must say that many are very helpful.

Thank you to the REAL MVPs here.

And for your info I am a medical professional and you???

I believe that "Alister" meant to post to a different thread. He was
referring to a poster called PCButts1 who pretends to be an MVP and tries
to get people to download his stolen software. This person doesn't appear
to have posted to your thread.

For your issue, either the computer is still not clean and/or the operating
system was damaged by the infections. You can try and fix winlogon if you
have a Bart's PE or a rescue CD that will allow you to work with the
infected computer's registry. Otherwise, back up your friend's data (can be
done by using a Linux Live CD or a Bart's PE) and try a Repair Install. You
will need to use a generic OEM install disk that matches the version of XP
installed on the laptop (XP Home/Pro/Media Center). If the Repair Install
doesn't work, do a Clean Install. Since your friend's computer is a laptop,
this means restoring to factory condition by whatever method provided by
the laptop mftr. Refer to the manual or the laptop mftr.'s website for how
to do this.

The PC is a DELL laptop Vostro 1500
The laptop is a computer used by a child and there is no info needed to be
saved (fortunately)
No CD or hidden partition for original CD.
However, I contacted Dell and they are shipping me an operating CD for the
PC.

On doing a repair CD issue:
The PC has Windows XP Home SP2 Media Center installed.

I have my own Dell Inspiron Laptop with XP PRO SP2 and the disc from DELL
but the product code on mine and the Vostros bottom COA do not have "OEM" in
them.

Can I use the XP PRO SP2 to do the repair or should I wait for the disk from
Dell ?

Also, am I correct in that if I do a repair, I will not have to reinstall
drivers or even enter a product code

Thanks for the reply.

Wait for the correct CD to arrive from Dell. There is no "XP Home Media
Center". Media Center is a superset of XP Pro so you should not attempt to
do the Repair Install with your XP Pro disk since it will be missing all
the Media Center files. You probably will not need to reinstall drivers
although if you do, you can easily get them from Dell's support site for
that model computer. You definitely will not need to enter a Product Key
when using Dell installation media on a Dell computer.

If the Repair Install doesn't work, just do a clean install with the new
Dell CD. After the clean installation, you will need to install all the
drivers.

Thank you for you great suggestions.

If need be I do have theDell MediaDirect DVD for reinstallation of Media
files and also have the Dell Drivers and Utility DVD. Why she does not have
the XP Home disk is unknown. She said this is all Dell sent. I checked the
original configuration on the Dell site with the service tag number and a
resore image was not applied to this PC.

I'll post back my outcome

Again,
Thanks

Dell's MediaDirect is *not* the same thing as XP Media Center Edition.
MediaDirect runs from a special partition. So probably the laptop has the
operating system XP Home with Dell's MediaDirect installed.

How to install Dell MediaDirect 2.0 in XP - http://tinyurl.com/eb5b8
Dell MediaDirect FAQ - http://tinyurl.com/2u9rqm

Do the Repair Install with the CD coming from Dell (Dell probably did send
your friend one originally, but no big). You will probably not need to
reinstall MediaDirect or drivers.

If you need to do a Clean Install, you can make the choice whether or not to
reinstall MediaDirect. if you do, simply leave the special partitioning
scheme alone when you do the installation and only delete/recreate the
system partition (C:). If your friend has never used MediaDirect and would
prefer to have that space on the hard drive for XP, delete the special
MediaDirect partition during the initial stages of the new Windows
installation. If there is a special small partition for Dell Diagnostics,
you can leave it.

Again you are correct. I just did not explain myself very clearly.
I booted with the PartitionMagic8 disk to look at the partitions and indeed
there is a diagnostic partition and another partition,i believe DD ?, which
must be the Media Direct.

My intentions were to only delete/create the "C" partition as you suggest if
the repair does not work and a clean install is required.

Again, Thank you

Sounds like a good plan. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

The repair was not successful.
If I delete the "C" partition and recreate the "C" partition and then
reinstall Windows XP and then the drivers required will I also have to
reinstall the DELL MediaDirect software since a separate partition for the
Media Direct exists?

Thanks

Yes, you will need to reinstall the MediaDirect software. It will use the
partition already created for it. As I said, if your friend doesn't use the
MediaDirect (and I haven't run into any clients with it who even knew what
it was) you can delete the MediaDirect partition during the XP install and
use the whole drive for Windows (except for the small Dell diagnostics
partition). It's your (and your friend's) choice.
