As of yesterday my computer cannot access C:\Documents and
Settings\Robert. I can sign into the account Robert from Windows XP
home SP2 the way I always could, the main screen, but now it seems I am
completely unable to access my files.

It goes something like this.

My password was recently changed. Being annoyed at this, I pulled out
my trusty password reset disk and flipped the password back. Having
nothing else to do, I then started my computer in Safe Mode and signed
into the Administrator acct. that appears. Using My Computer I went to
C:\Documents and Settings\Robert and messed around in the properties.
I'm pretty sure I made it so "DC1SM321\Robert" and "System" were the
only users with access to those folders. Then trying to sign in,
Windows seems to have seperated Robert and C:\Documents and
Settings\Robert, as mentioned above, and given the Robert user a new
directory, being C:\Documents and Settings\Robert.DC1SM321, or Robert
followed by my computer's name. I know this happened to my sister
also, but I have no idea why, as undoing my changes and allowing anyone
access has not helped. Please HELP!!!.

I have slightly-recent backups of my data, but I'd sure as heck like to
get my old stuff.

It sounds like you may not have security software installed on your system
(anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware programs) and are not behind a router.

On the contrary, I am behind a router, and use Norton SystemWorks 2005
for antivirus protection, and ZoneAlarm for a firewall. If ZoneAlarm
is ever shut down, XP Home SP2's firewall turns on automatically.

This still doesn't help, hasn't ANYONE seen this problem before?

So nobody at all knows anything? So I should just go cry about m
dozens of gigs of uneraseable unrecoverable disk space?

Hmmph, I think I'll go try other boards

System Restore should fix it.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. If it doesn't work, I'll freak out on you.
What happens to any programs I may have installed in the meanime?

PS. Take it back to the day before you edited your settings.

You'll have to reinstall them because the registry keys will no longer be
there, but any files you created using the program(s) won't be affected by
System Restore.

I fixed it. Just re-assign ownership of the restricted folders to ever
one of the groups I could select. It was pretty sweet, but I'
reformatting anyway now. Just gotta make some backups.

And Nero went strange so now I can't make backups 'cause I lost th
original product codes, but oh well
