"User Names" have disappeared from Welcome screen!

When I power up my HP laptop, I get the Welcome Screen "without" any user
names to select. I "have not" recently loaded any new software from the
internet or otherwise. I am running Windows XP Home.

I have tried the ctrl-alt-del routine to force the log on screen to appear
during a regular boot and safe mode. The log on screen lists my first and
last name as the "User". I have "never" set up the password for this screen.
I have left both fields blank and have also used "administrator" as the user
and left the password blank. Without any luck!

Your thoughts?

Joe,

Start Windows in Safe Mode Command Prompt and login as Administrator (built-in). Then launch the System Restore tool for a rollback.

How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP:

Joe,

What happens when you input the Administrator user name & password in Safe Mode?

I am not able to login as Administrator in normal or Safe Mode.

Please advise.

When I input "Administrator" as the user and leave the password blank, it
kicks me back to the login screen to attempt again.

I did no load Windows XP Home into my laptop, HP did. My full name appears
as the "user" in the login screen and the password is blank.

I can not get past the login screen.

Please advise.

Not idea why the logon is rejected _without any error messages_. In case of incorrect credentials, the user will be notified generally.

BTW, some HP systems offer a non-destructive recovery method, which preserves the user data and repairs the Operating System. Does your model have this option? It's always a better idea to follow the software recovery methods suggested by the PC manufacturer.

Ramesh,

I have the recovery disks from HP, but I have not attempted to do a recovery
yet. I do not want to lose any of my data.

If I boot with the recovery disks, will it give me "options" before it
proceeds to recover the system? Or will it wipe out all of my data as soon
as I boot the CD?

Your thoughts?

Joe,

Like I said before, the recovery options differ very much for OEM systems (HP/Compaq) and they have their own software recovery methods. You may enquire if there is a "Non-Destructive" recovery method available for your HP/Compaq PC.
