user names and passwords

I went to register on Bellsouth's home page and it
brought up a new page that said for security reasons I
was to use a new user name and password, but where user
name is supposed to be typed it is already there and
won't let me change it and when I try to continue it
tells me only letters and numbers and dashes are
allowed. Well my original user name as show above as a
period in it before the word net, and it won't let me
continue on. What can I do? Please help me. I'm so new
at all of this stuff. Linda
