User Interface Core

Hello,

Here again... :) My current test image includes the minimal hardware
configuration and Explorer shell.

Under User Interface Core, the followings are set ONLY:

Show Desktop icons:
Show Shut Down on Start Menu:
Show context menu on Shell folders:
Show context menu on Task bar:
Show Notifications on Task bar:
Use Windows Classic folders:
Enable Drag and Drop on Start Menu:
Number of programs on Start menu: 0

After boooting the image, the Start menu shows the followings:

Internet (it points to inetcpl.cpl but it doesn't exist)
E-mail (it points to inetcpl.cpl but it doesn't exist)
All programs/Startup/(Empty)
My recent documents
My computer
Control Panel
Printers and Faxes
Log off...
Shut Down

It doesn't seem to correlate the settings in User Interface Core. What
on earth is going on here?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Karoly

Hi Karoly,

Are you 100% sure that this file does not exist?
It is part of component "Internet Explorer".

Karoly,

I could not get what exactly you were expecting?
See my comments inline..

E-mail (it points to inetcpl.cpl but it doesn't exist)

These two above are probably bug coming from some other components.
All programs/Startup/(Empty)

This is because you set "Number of programs on Start menu: 0".
My recent documents
My computer
Control Panel
Printers and Faxes

The above are name spaces (not simple icons) so they appear anyway unless you deregister them (let us know if you want to know how
to do that).
Log off...
Shut Down

"Show Shut Down on Start Menu" option.

Well.. beside wierd Internet and Email icons I don't see too many discrepancies.

Hi Slobodan,

I'm 100% sure, no Internet Explorer/Outlook Express related components
are in the project. Moreover, once you clcik on the icons, a dialog box
appears that 'The file this shortcut is pointing to , doesn't exists (or
something similar). Do you want to delete this item from the Start Menu?'

BTW, HNY! :)

Any idea where from?

What options do I have here?

But

-Show My Recent Documents on Start Menu:
-Show My Computer on Start Menu:
-Show Control Panel on Start Menu:
-Show Printers and Faxes on Start Menu:

were unchecked under UIC! So why are there then?

"Show Shut Down on Start Menu" option.

Show Log Off on Start Menu was unchecked as well!

Karoly,
Any idea where from?

Well.. I am not sure wher ethese items are coming from. Although my guess would be - Epxlorer load of Shell32.dll.
Anyway, I don't think there is a way to "remove" these icons from TD directly.
However, you can do that at run time. The registry values you will need to tweak are:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage]
"Favorites"
"FavoritesChanges"
"FavoritesResolve"

These are undocumented binary values. So I'd suggest you to set up the Simple Start Menu options on XP Pro and then just copy the
result registry mentioned above to your XPe build.
What options do I have here?

You can set this directly at run time:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList"=dword:00000001
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Start_MinMFU"=dword:00000000

But

-Show My Recent Documents on Start Menu:
-Show My Computer on Start Menu:
-Show Control Panel on Start Menu:
-Show Printers and Faxes on Start Menu:

were unchecked under UIC! So why are there then?

Check (and set) if these registry values were set at run time:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced], "Start_ShowRecentDocs"=dword:0
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced], "Start_ShowMyComputer"=dword:0
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced], "Start_ShowControlPanel"=dword:0
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer], "NoControlPanel"=dword:1
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer], "NoControlPanel"=dword:1
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced], "Start_ShowPrinters"=dword:0
Show Log Off on Start Menu was unchecked as well!

Check/set the following registry value at run time:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer], "StartMenuLogoff"=dword:0

Which ones?
There were much of info in the thread.

No, you are not. Does it there on your target Desktop when you clear the checkbox?

yes...i remember that karoly had the same problem in this thread. i made a
test image with the components necessary to have an explorer shell plus the
pc components imported via pmq. i set UIC to have only control panel visible
in start menu and, before installing sp2, it worked. now with sp2 i see
control panel, my computer, my recent documents, printers and faxes, IE and
outlook express. i managed to remove some of them by registry settings, but
why should i have to do this if in UIC settings exixts to do the work for me
????

niru,

Sorry, I haven't seen this bug.
Actually I saw that User Interface Core component has not been changed (more important - the components script has not been changed
in SP2). So there should not be different behavior vs SP1 except there are some other new SP2 components (or new versions of some
components) that bring in the same registry entries. Then it would be a bug.

I will take a look at the database to see if I can find those misleading components. I will post if I manage to find any helpful
info.
