User Info not loading @ start; "AuthUserInit....Runtime Error '53'

When I boot up my computer, it beeps after the main Windows login screen then
gives me a pop up message stating, "AuthUserInit....Runtime Error '53'." I
only have one user account on this computer.

It will then take me to my desktop, but nothing, no desktop icons, nor even
the lower tool bar w/ system tray & start menu, will show up. Then randomly,
they all appear.

Help! Does anyone know how to fix this? I didn't get any error messages the
last time I performed shut down of my computer, I don't know what caused
this to happen and I would like to make it stop!

Thanks!

DJ,

Try a System Restore rollback.

Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur:

Thank you. I just I tried this as instructed. It didn't work from the last
date prior to the issues starting, so I went back and picked a variety of
restore dates and this did not fix the problem. Another suggestion on how I
can fix this issue?

Thanks for your help!

DJ,

Once you login, open Task Manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL

Start a new "userinit.exe" task, followed by a "Explorer.exe" task.

Does that help (temporarily?)

Temporarily, yes & thank you.

sorry to be a pest, but I would REALLY appreciate the info on how to fix
this if its out there. I just purchased Windows XP upgrade and haven't even
had it a week, so its frustrating that something so basic on it isn't
working. I am assuming this is an XP issue as I have never had this problem
before.

Thanks again,
DJ

DJ,

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Set "Shell" to "Explorer.exe"
Set "Userinit" to "X:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,"

CAUTION: Where X:\ is the drive-letter where Windows is installed. Typing the Userinit value incorrectly will prevent you from logging on to Windows XP.

If both the values are correctly set, and if the problem still persist, a repair installation might help.
