User Desktops

I notice that sometimes I'll install a piece of software, with an icon
on my desktop, and the icon appears on others' desktops as well. What
determines whether something happens on one desktop or all users'
desktops?

I have the same question with regard to pre-loaded programs. I want
Zone Alarm to load whenever the computer is used by anybody, because
it's the computer's firewall. But some programs should not be
preloaded with any user's logon.

Thanks!

Hi Matt,

Where it is placed depends on the installer used by the progam manufacturer.
Older software often only installs for the user who installed it. Programs
written for multiple user environments will install with the shortcuts in
the AllUsers folders. There is nothing that you can do to change this, but
you can just move the shortcuts to the proper place (like moving the ZA
startup shortcut to the AllUsers startup folder).

Start/run msconfig, and disable any programs on the startup tab that you do
not want to have running for all users. Then place shortcuts to those
programs only in the startup folders for the profiles that want them.
