Need help with 'user profile' (XP)

J

jw

I created a new user with full admin privileges.
Now I want to clone the profile of my main user to this new user so I
do not have to manually alter 'display' and 'power' settings (Control
Panel). I went to the trouble of setting the display options (e.g.
desktop icon size) for my main user originally, and I simply want
those options for this new user.

'Copy profile' only seemed to copy the desktop icons. Maybe I did
that wrong?

How do I do this?

The trick is to first make sure you are able to see hidden files and folder
and super hidden files and folders. do this in folder options. Next, in the
system properties dialog box click the advanced tab. the middle button user
profiles is where you need to go.
make a folder on the HD to copy the profile to. after copying the
profile first, make sure the person you want to give this profile to has
logged in at least once, then copy all of the files and folders from where
you copied the profile to on the HD and paste them in the documents and
setting folder of the user that you wish to give the settings to.

i almost forgot after logging in with the account the first time you will
need to resart the computer to rease the desktop.ini file. if you get a
cannot copy errror this is most likely the casue.

now restart the machine agian and login as the new user. the login may take
a min or two while the system updates everything.

Well I think I did all this. I have a second user now. He has all
the first user's desktop icons and they seem to execute ok.
But the settings for icon size and desktop background etc did not
transfer. I took a look for desktop.ini and only found it under
Windows which should make it common to both users.

What do you think?

If you did as i Said then the background and everything should ahev came
with the profile. are you sure you have hidden files and super hidden system
files showing. if i were you i would start over and repeat the process.
delette the account you already created. there is a desktop.ini file for
every user.
located in %systemroot%\documents and settings\user\
Hold on is this XP PRO?
there are tons of desktop.ini files in this folder.

1. create account for the new user profile that we are going to copy the
other profile to.
2. log in as this person.
3. reboot
1. log in as admin
2. copy the other profile (the one you want to transfer settings from) to
folder created on HD. the tool to do this is in the advanced tab in system
prop. applet. (you can't be logged in as the user you are copying
2. now be sure that you have hidden files and super hidden system files
shown. (this is in folder options, view options.
3. Copy all files and folders to the the newly added profile that you
created in step one.
4. if done correctlly this will pull down all settings. desktop backgroud
font size everything. if the background was not copied then something in the
process has failed.

when you search for desktop.ini you have to tell the search to look in
hidden files and folders.

When you copy a profile you are copying the settings from one user to
another, files, etc..
This does not include NK2 type files etc..

Your problem is based on the computer system, you should have image
the new system not the profile.
Your issue is based on a shell structure like Command Prompt here from
Microsoft, this program is not user specific it is computer specific.
