I thought this user was hidden from view with an update to .net 1.1. I just
formatted and reinstalled Windows XP Home and have installed all updates
including .net 1.1 and all security patches and then .net 2.0. This user
account is still showing in my Control Panel.
Any ideas why?

What is the ASP.NET Machine Account?

Thanks Carey, I am aware of what it is. My question is why is it showing in
the Users' panel. It's supposed to be hidden, at least in Home edition.

I just did a format and clean install of XP Pro a week ago. I got all the
updates and now have the Welcome screen come up to click on the only User
Name I have. This is the way it was in the past until a Sp/1 for .NET update
came out I believe.

Since then there were more updates and one of them take you back to the way
it was before. I don't know why. This is what Peter is talking about too.
Which update caused this?

I just deleted the user account cause I don't need it since I don't do any
development. Only having one User Name on this computer makes it a nuisance
to have to click on my name on the Welcome Screen every time I turn on my
computer. Wish they would have just left it alone.

The strange thing here is that asp.net user doesn't appear on my Welcome
screen, only in the Users (Control Panel) section.

No, the asp.net user name don't appear on the Welcome Screen. Just my name
does. I am the only user and before there were no names on the Welcome
Screen but now there is which is mine.

That is the way it was too when .NET first came out. Then they had the .NET
Service Pack update and that fixed that. But, like you I had to do a clean
install recently and got the Windows Updates and now the Welcome Screen with
my user name is back.

I forget exactly what I did now to eliminate the Welcome Screen with the
user name on it. I think I just removed the .NET user account. Or, maybe I
went like before the .NET Service Pack fix that eliminated it. That was to
go to Run and type in “control userpasswords2” without the quotes but with
the space. Then took out the check mark.
