Hi,
I use WIndows XP home edition on my laptop. I had created only one user
account to login and was able to complete the login successfully
earlier. But now when I switch on the computer and windows get loaded
it shows the Xp welcome/login page where it prompts to select and click
on the user account to login. But icon for any user account does not
appear. Hence I am not able to login.
Earlier after switching on the windows used to log me in directly and
show the desktop after switching on the computer.
So somehow the setting for login/logout got changed and its not picking
up my user account.
Can anyone help me on this.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I followed the steps for recovery console and
could reach the point where it ask for Administrator password. The XP
on my machine was preinstalled by the manufacturer (Compaq). So i left
the password as blank but it did not accept saying that the password is
incorrect, Please enter the valid password.
Can you help me on this? Hwat could be this password.

There are hard to use utilities floating around to change the password. http://systeminternals.com sells one that is pretty easy to
use. If you can access BartPE bootable CD and it's utilities, you can do that copy of a new userinit.exe described in my previous
link.
iRecover File recovery, unformat, undelete, virus recovery, RAW file system BartPE: http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/irecover.htm
Forgot the Administrator's Password: http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm
I feel it only polite to mention that all this is a tinkering with the guts of windows, and it is not for the fainthearted.
Professional help could be the best choice, depending on how familiar you are with command line work.
